I used to live in Kitty Hawk about 6 miles from the first flight. We would walk on the replaced rail where the flight occurred like it was a balance beam. That was back when the Park grounds were closed in winter. We also used to skateboard down the hill where the monument sits. The Park Service guys would run us out of there about once every couple of months until the park was open for the season.
